東北大学大学院医学系研究科障害科学専攻では、人生の各ステージで発生する障害を単なる「疾患（disease）」の立場ではなく「能力障害（disability）」 としてとらえ、さらなる機能回復、要介護の軽減、社会復帰と再定住を目標としながら、新しい 治療方策、リハビリテーションそしてケアのありかたの模索、各障害の分析、評価や予防を含めた新しい保健医療体系の確立を目指しています。そのために、本専攻では従来のリハビリテーション医学に、保健学、運動学、生体工学、臨床心理学、保健医療、行動医学などを取り入れ、 基礎と臨床を一体化しながら、幅広い学問領域での研究活動を行っています。

At this Disability Science Course, we perform not only searching for treatment but also go forward to establish new structure for Health and Medical Science which includes analyzing, assessment and prevention of disability. In other words, we grapple with comprehensive research fields by combining clinical and fundamental medicine, i.e. Rehabilitation Medicine with Health Science, Sports and Exercise Science, Bioengineering, Behavioral Medicine etc. This course was established as the only one for the Graduate School in 1994. It is a major hub that supplies leader, researcher and expert in the area who capable with practical and international disability science education and research.
